Why Does the University of Latvia Need Gold?
The University of Latvia has announced a purchase competition for investment gold to the value of 16 704 Lats (23,553 Euros).
The gold will be used to research a novel spallation target material – an alloy of lead and gold. Its purchase was financed by the 7th Framework ESS-Preparatory Phase Research Project.
Worth 1.5 billion Euros, ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden. It will provide jobs for more than 600 researchers, including Latvia’s brightest scientific minds, who will be able to take part in the development and use of this major scientific infrastructure project.
More details about the project can be found in the University of Latvia's magazine, Alma Mater.
